Homonyms
Like homonyms, when two words have the same spelling but different meanings, Julie & Jesse’s Homonyms is a series of porcelain vessels presented in pairs, fabricated with matching components, but yielding a unique shape.
Each set of two combines archetypal Chinese vase forms, cast from found industrial moulds, topped with structures resembling headdresses that are entirely handmade with the waste trimmings derived from the production of the vases themselves.
The cast shapes are the common denominator in each pair whilst the constructions made from the production leftovers become a distinctive feature for each vessel differentiating one from the other.
“Observing production lines, we’ve always been drawn to the portion that goes to waste. With clay, though it can be recycled before firing, the residues of production bear interesting characteristics that can be transfigured to add individuality to each standard cast.”
Through the duo’s unconventional approach of crafting unique objects from originally identical mass production tools, they challenge the assumption that volume always equates to efficiency and questions whether serial production inevitably results in uniformity.
