Exhibition of prototypes for “Heritage is Innovation”
Heritage is Innovation
Design Trust Futures Studio 2019
Proud to be a part of the Design Trust Futures Studio 2019 looking at the theme Heritage is Innovation. March 25th 2019 we presented miniatures and prototype sketches of our future project about Tiger Balm Gardens at Haw Par Mansion.
In 2019, the theme and concept of Design Trust Futures Studio (DTFS) is ‘HERITAGE IS INNOVATION’. With this focus, DTFS 2019 curates new conversations and site-specific objects with Hong Kong-based designers, many of whom have been involved in Design Trust as grant recipients and designer mentees over the past years. Check out our Design Prototypes Preview at the historic 1936 Haw Par Mansion in Tai Hang, and explore how they can extend to other cultures and communities beyond Hong Kong.
Taking on the alternate role of contemporary archaeologists, alchemists and designers we are experimenting with ceramic and textile in the making of sculptural objects to incite visitors of Haw Par Mansion to look, travel, wander and dwell into a reinterpreted microcosm of the lost Tiger Balm Gardens.
Called Terra Mobile, our project contains multi-layered narratives that explore with wit and nuance the didactic, sculptural, unconventional yet traditional qualities of Aw Boon Haw’s visionary wonderland.
Investigating the possibilities of using waste threads from Tai Ping’s production line in the making of a new clay body we intend to fashion a cognitive, playful and poetic rendition of the garden’s landscape elements tracing their lineage to weave a thread between past, present and future and activate the gardens of Haw Par Mansion.
