Beyond the Loom

We are delighted to present our first collaborative piece with textile artist and designer Elaine Yan Ling Ng on the occasion of her show Beyond the Loom at Nuovo.

Titled Reverie in motion the piece transforms the tactile quality of Elaine’s Reverie Jacquard paper fabric series into a modular kinetic installation that blends bamboo, copper and porcelain.
Reverie in motion is a sinuous 45-metre-long ribbon installation of 3,000 porcelain beads, bamboo, and copper, handmade by textile artist and designer Elaine Yan Ling Ng and ceramic artists and designers Julie & Jesse. Each porcelain bead is hand-rolled and pressed to create a crackled texture that echoes Elaine’s ‘Reverie’ fabric details. Bamboo replaces traditional yarn, threading through the ceramic beads to let weight and pattern guide each strand’s movement.
The interplay of ceramic, bamboo, and copper, as well as matte and gloss finishes, adds a striking visual contrast, and the bamboo changes shape in the humidity.
The modular units allow the installation to be reconfigured according to the setting and space.
Inspired by Alexander Calder’s mid-20th-century mobiles, this hanging kinetic artwork moves gracefully, casting dancing shadows that create a meditative, sensory experience.
